DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - There was no pity or sympathy from U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Edmunds as she sentenced former Detroit Mayor  Kwame Kilpatrick on Thursday to 28 years in prison, the precise figure that U.S. Attorneys had requested. Kilpatrick was sentenced on a total of 24 counts including racketeering, tax, and fraud charges. Kilpatrick apologized for ruining his father’s life and his mother’s career and tearfully at times asking for mercy.

The judge noted that Kilpatrick took millions while the city was in a financial death spiral. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade says it sends the right message. Edmunds also ordered Kilpatrick to pay restitution and a hearing on the that issue will be held in 90 days.
