Michigan Secretary of State says hundreds were not citizens when they registered to vote

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson plans to send letters to 600 registered voters in Michigan telling them that they were not U.S. citizens when they registered to vote, according to her cross-check of the voter file with federal citizenship records. The letter says “congratulations” to those who may have become citizens since, but warns the others that it would be illegal for them to vote.

Johnson says it’s her duty to deal with the issue and call the situation a disservice to other voters.  Many apparently admitted on their voter registration cards that they were not citizens, filling out the forms at Secretary of State offices when they applied for drivers licenses or state I.D. cards. MIRS News reports that Ryan Bates with Michigan United considers this another attempt by the Republican secretary of state to intimidate minority voters.
