COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It’s now official. Mastronardi Produce issued a news release Monday announcing it’s started a project to double the size of its Coldwater greenhouse. The Kingsville, Ontario based Mastronardi recently broke ground on the second phase of the Coldwater facility, which opened in 2012. Construction is expected to finish by next summer, creating a total of 60 acres of production at the high tech greenhouse facility along Fillmore Road on the city’s southwest side.
The plant which uses grow lights to provide tomatoes to consumers year-round across the Midwest, expects to add with the expansion as many as 90 new jobs, which is about the size of the current workforce. The new addition featuring even more technological advances will allow for the growing of a wider variety of products. The company also expects the expansion will bring increased energy efficiency and fewer food miles, since more locally grown products will be available in Michigan. The plant will also use rainwater irrigation and recycle its water supply
