Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Keith Wenning had 324 yards passing and three TD’s as the Ball State Cardinals toppled the Broncos 38-17 on Saturday afternoon at Waldo Stadium, dropping WMU’s record to 0-8 for the first time since 1996.
WMU scored the first points of the game on a 41 yard field goal from Andrew Haldeman with 8:08 left in the 1st quarter but Ball State responded with 24 straight. Scott Secor drilled a 37 yard field goal to tie the game at three with 3:05 left in the opening quarter.
Ball State added on two more touchdowns in the second quarter, first from Horactio Banks on a 38 yard run with 9:03 left in the quarter and then on a 42 pass and catch from Wenning to Jamil Smith to take a 17-3 halftime lead.
After a WMU three and out to start the second half, the Cardinals took little time adding on another score as Wenning connected with Willie Snead from 27 yards out, increasing the lead to 24-3.
Zach Terrell making his second consecutive start in place of the injured Tyler VanTubbergen went 19-34 with a TD pass to Corey Davis in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 24-10. Davis hauled in nine receptions for 103 yards, his third game of more than 100 yards receiving.
Wenning connected on his third TD of the game with 10:48 left on a two yard strike to Zane Fakes. The TD pass was Wenning’s 75th for his career, setting the Ball State TD passing record.
Jahwan Edwards tallied on his only score of the game on a 25 yard rushing TD to give Ball State the 38-10 advantage.
The Broncos scored with just 14 seconds left in the game as Ball State was running out the clock but fumbled and Ronald Zamort recovered the loose ball and took it to the house, closing out the scoring at 38-17.
Game Notes: Dareyon Chance led the Broncos in rushing with 120 yards on 14 attempts…Donald Celiscar picked off a pass from Cardinals backup QB Ozzie Mann for his third interception of the season and sixth for his career…Wenning finished the day 25 of 38…Snead led the Cardinals in receiving with seven receptions and 90 yards…Mike Jones was the leading tackler for WMU with 11 total tackles…Ball State outgained WMU 483 to 368 yards…This was the first game the Broncos had allowed more than 250 yards in the air…WMU takes the field next at UMass on Saturday Oct. 26 @3pm.
