COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- One of the Kalamazoo’s newest and most exotic new employers has been hiring and production has begun. Hark Orchids, a German firm has completed construction on a 7.1-million dollar facility at the Midlink Business Park.
Plant Manager David Gordon says they have hired three dozen people so far, or about half the number they plan to hire, to propagate the plants.
Once they are all trained and working, they will open up 30-more clean benches after the New Year, and bring the plant’s payroll up to 75 to 80 employees.
Growing Orchids is not like raising petunias. The exacting work is all done by folks wearing lab coats, rubber gloves and working in a clean room, and there is no dirt involved.
