COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A Coldwater man has been cited after the Branch County Sheriff’s Department says he caused an injury traffic accident involving three vehicles Friday in Ovid Township. The collision occurred around 10:30 am on Old 27 at Central Road. According to the Sheriff’s Department, 42-year old Stephen Shaffer was westbound on Central with his pickup truck pulling a large utility trailer but he didn’t stop for the stop sign. As a result, 16-year old Kelsey Parrish of Coldwater, who was driving southbound in a Jeep SUV, struck the trailer and also hit a third vehicle, a car that was stopped at the corner on Central Road facing east bound with 70-year old Phyllis Smoker of Coldwater behind the wheel. The impact of the collision forced the Parrish SUV off the road and through the stop sign and rolled over, ending up on its side, trapping all 3 occupants. After about 15 minutes, they were freed from the wreckage by Lakeland firemen. They were taken to the Community Health Center of Branch County for treatment with no information released on their conditions and the names of the 2 passengers in the Parrish car were not given out. Shaffer and Smoker were not injured.
Shaffer was cited for disregarding a stop sign causing a personal injury accident. Deputies said no alcohol or substances were a factor in the collision.
