AUBURN HILLS, MI (WTVB) - The Detroit Pistons begin a new season tonight under new head coach Maurice Cheeks as Detroit opens its schedule with a home game at the Palace against the Washington Wizards. The Pistons hope to break a string of five straight years without winning more than 30 games but they’ll start this season a bit banged up at the guard position. Newcomer Brandon Jennings will be out for a while after undergoing oral surgery while veteran Rodney Stuckey will sit tonight with an injured thumb. Cheeks, who is Detroit’s fourth coach in six seasons, replaces Lawrence Frank after the Pistons went 29-53 last year.

The league tipped off its season last night with a trio of games including the two time defending champion Miami Heat rolling past the Chicago Bulls 107-95 in Miami. Also, Indiana beat Orlando 97-87 while the L-A Lakers downed the Los Angeles Clippers 116-103.
