DETROIT (WKZO) -- The director of the Detroit Institute of Arts has issued a strong statement in regards to the sale of any artwork to pay Detroit’s bankruptcy debts.

In the museum’s online September news bulletin, Graham Beal wrote that if the collection was sold to pay off the city’s debts, the DIA would be forced to close.  According to Beal, if pieces of the collection were sold it would threaten the tri-county millages passed last summer, which raises 23-million dollars a year for museum operations.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has said that he would move to rescind his county’s millage if a single piece of art was sold.  Beal says he would fight any attempt to seize art for sale.
