Battle Creek Commissioners approve LGBT community to their non-discrimination ordinance

BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- The Battle Creek City Commission has approved an ordinance amendment adding the LBGT community to their non-discrimination ordinance.

The vote came after about a dozen people spoke, most of them in favor but there were opponents, who opposed it on religious grounds, saying gays have not been recognized as deserving of rights for the last 3,000 years and nothing new has changed that.

Supporters argued that it was the fair thing to do. The vote was not unanimous but it passed.

If anyone is charged with discriminating against a gay, a lesbian, a bisexual or a transgendered person either in housing or on the job, the case would go to arbitration to try and settle the facts and work out a solution, but citations could be issued if there is a compelling case and the accused is uncooperative.

There is an exception for religious organizations, if they have moral objections to gays.
