BOSTON, MA (WTVB) - The Tigers fell 2-to-1 to the Red Sox in a pitcher’s duel last night at Fenway Park. The loss cost Detroit starter Max Scherzer his chance at becoming only the second hurler to open a season with a 20-and-1 record with the defeat dropping him to 19-and-2. The Tigers and Red Sox will play the rubber game of the 3-game series between the division leaders tonight in Boston.
Scherzer was outpitched by Jon Lester, who struck out nine over seven innings of one-run ball as he improved to 13-and-8. Scherzer fanned eight over seven frames, but allowed both runs. Jose Iglesias doubled for the lone run rbi for Detroit, which had Miguel Cabrera in the lineup for the first time in four games. However the Tiger slugger, who has been hobbled for more than a month by a variety of injuries, went 0-for-4. He came up in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and two down, but grounded out to end the threat. Boston scored their runs in the bottom of the frame on a 2-run single by Will Middlebrooks.
Tonight, the Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound in the series finale. Detroit’s lead in the American League Central over the second place Indians slipped to 7-and-a-half games after Cleveland beat Baltimore.
The Chicago White Sox lost 6-to-4 to the Yankees in New York and the Cubs fell 6-2 to the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
