Western Michigan University plans to save East Hall, but how much of it will survive

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It appears the preservationists have lost the first battle of Prospect Hill, but a second may be emerging.

Demolition is underway on WMU’s East Campus. The Speech and Hearing Building is just a bare patch, and West Hall will be razed next.

This week retired WMU Administrator Tom Coyne appealed to City Commissioners to get behind saving the wings of East Hall. That’s the one building the University plans to restore.

He says the wings of the building were once used as a school for local children where students at what was then Western Normal College learned to teach.

He says the land was donated by the city and East Hall is part of a tradition of the importance of education in Kalamazoo that lead to The Promise today.

University Spokesperson Cheryl Roland says the decision on whether the wings will be saved has not been made and may depend on fundraising efforts that have already begun.

WMU Plans on turning the old landmark into an Alumni center with meeting rooms, offices, banquet facilities and other amenities they hope will emerge from a series of community forums that begin next month.
