KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Was there a thaw between Russia and the U.S. at the end of the G-20 summit?
Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama pulled their chairs together and had a 20-minute conversation but it doesn’t appear that there was any agreement on the hottest two issues: what to do about Syria and the disposition of fugitive leaker Edward Snowden.
WMU Russia expert James Butterfield says differences between the two countries is not unusual; in fact it’s the norm.
Dr. Butterfield says Snowden has become an embarrassment for both countries. He says Putin doesn’t particularly care for what he calls “snitches” but feels compelled not to release him either.
Butterfield says he doesn’t anticipate a return to the cold war, just an ongoing difference of opinion on many things and cooperation when both sides benefit.
