CHARLOTTE, N.C.(WTVB) - Ryan Newman will replace Martin Truex Jr. in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship after NASCAR handed down severe penalties to MWR-Michael Waltrip Racing on Monday for its actions this past weekend at Richmond International Raceway. According to NASCAR, MWR was found to have committed rule book violations detrimental to stock car racing. MWR's three Sprint Cup teams with Truex, Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers have been penalized each with a loss of 50 championship driver and 50 championship owner points. Newman led Saturday's race at Richmond with seven laps to go but Bowyer spun his car to bring out a caution. Newman ultimately finished third, but needed a win to qualify for the Chase outright.
The Chase starts this Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. In addition to the points loss, NASCAR levied the largest fine in the history of the sport, $300,000, on MWR for it rules violation.
