DETROIT (WKZO) -- A Belgian man remains jailed after he allegedly tried to sneak into the United States by swimming across the Detroit River.
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, the man was helped out of the river by a guard on the Detroit Princess cruise ship early last Thursday morning. He identified himself as Sam Smolders to U.S. Border Patrol agents and said he was visiting the area from Arizona when he was assaulted by three men who threw his bag into the river, and he had jumped in to get his belongings.
Agents pulled the bag from the river, which was wrapped in waterproof material and also found a personal flotation device and his Belgian passport. Smolders, who was denied entry into the States in 2008, is charged with being an illegal immigrant in the U.S.
