KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Getting arrested for drunk driving can be an expensive proposition between bail, hiring a lawyer, paying court costs and fines.
Then there are the annual state penalties and the cost of car insurance, which skyrockets when you are convicted of drinking and driving.
For over a decade, the city of Kalamazoo has also charged drunk drivers for the cost of handling their arrests, processing defendants, doing the tests and writing the reports.
The city mailed out a bill charging for reimbursement for the cost of any police officers or command personnel their per-minute rate.
But that can get complicated and tedious, keeping track of the different pay rates and the courts were beginning to question the integrity of the system.
Monday night, City Commissioners will be asked to start charging a flat rate which uses an average of what they have been charging for the last five months.
Covering accidents and doing emergency room blood draws will cost extra.
