DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers were shutout 8-to-0 by Seattle last night at Comerica Park but Detroit’s magic number to clinch the American League Central was trimmed to five after the second place Indians lost to the Royals. The Tigers and Mariners play again this afternoon with Seattle trying to salvage a split of the 4-game series.
Last night, Detroit starter Justin Verlander fell to 13-and-12 despite allowing only three runs on four hits in seven innings. He walked a batter in each of the first three frames but didn’t issue a walk the rest of the night and retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. The Tigers loaded the bases twice but came up empty both in the first and fourth innings. Hisashi Iwakuma dealt eight shutout innings for Seattle, holding Detroit to four hits with six strikeouts.
Doug Fister goes to the mound for Detroit this afternoon and then the Tigers wrap up their final home stand of the season this weekend with 3 games against the Chicago White Sox, who lost last night 4-3 to the Twins.
The Chicago Cubs were blanked 7-to-0 at Milwaukee.
