The Tigers had a chance to clinch the division championship on home field on Sunday afternoon, but the White Sox spoiled the party winning 6-3 at Comerica Park. Detroit went into the day with their magic number at two and needed a win and a Cleveland loss to clinch. With it being the home finale the Tigers will need to go on the road to clinch the title.
Chicago got on the board in the first inning when former Tiger Avisail Garcia singled home a run. Detroit tied the game in the fourth inning on a Prince Fielder solo home run to right. It was his 25th home run of the season for Fielder. Then the White Sox took control of the game in the fifth inning when they scored three runs. They added two more runs in the seventh inning to make the score 6-1. Detroit added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an Austin Jackson sacrifice fly. They added their final run in the ninth inning on a Ramon Santiago groundout.
The White Sox beat up on Anibal Sanchez. He lasted only five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks. The Tigers’ offense produced 11 hits, but once again were unable to come up with the clutch hits. They were just 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
Detroit now heads out on a road trip that will take them to Minnesota and Miami to finish out the season. They start up a three game series with the Twins on Monday at 8:10. Justin Verlander will make the start for the Tigers against Mike Pelfrey.
