DETROIT (WKZO) -- It began with rumors that there were packs of wild dogs, tens of thousands of them terrorizing Detroit’s abandoned neighborhoods.
That was an exaggeration but with Detroit’s Animal Control Dept. down to 6 dog catchers, a group called the World Animal Awareness Society canvassed the streets of Detroit this weekend to try and get an idea of just how big the problem really is.
Survey Director Tom McPhee says they have found dogs left chained up and starving.
Emergency Manager Kevin Orr says it’s a public safety issue.
The results won’t be available until early next year, but with winter coming, that may be too late to help many of the animals.
