LANSING, MI (WTVB) - With the election still 14 months away, Governor Rick Snyder, who hasn’t even formally declared he is a candidate yet, is running his first campaign ad today in several major markets in Michigan. It’s a 60-second version of the 5 minute film he ran at the Republican confab on Mackinac Island last weekend and opens with Snyder saying he has a nerdy job but someone has to do it.

Zach Pohl on the campaign staff of Democratic Challenger Mark Schauer says it’s a sign the Governor is running scared and desperate to repair the damage done to his own poll numbers. Pohl contends an incumbent governor has never gone on television here with political ads more than a year before an election.

Snyder is reportedly spending more than half a million on this first ad blitz. It could be a sign of a lot of things including that Snyder has a lot of money to spend, he wants to dissuade the tea party from putting up a challenger, or he wants to try to improve his numbers when its easier to do so and no one else is running ads.
