MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WTVB) - The Tigers are celebrating a three-peat after winning another division crown last night. Detroit clinched the American League Central title by holding on for a 1-0 win at Minnesota in the rubber game of the 3-game set at Target Field. Austin Jackson led off the contest with a triple and scored the only run of the night on a Torii Hunter single. That was enough offense for Tiger starter Max Scherzer who tossed 7 strong innings, limiting the Twins to two hits with 10 strikeouts to improve his major league best record to 21-and-3. Joaquin Benoit locked the door in the ninth for his 24th save of the season.

Jim Leyland earned his 700th win as manager of the Tigers with the victory putting him in elite company, becoming the third manager in Detroit history to reach at least 700 wins, joining Hall-of-Famers Sparky Anderson and Hugh Jennings.

It’s still too early to say what team the Tigers will face in the American League Division Series beginning next week. It will be either the Oakland A’s or Boston Red Sox with the most likely matchup having Detroit open on the road against the A’s. The only other time the Tigers have gone to the postseason in three straight years was from 1907-to-1909.

Detroit has the day off today before finishing up the regular season this weekend at Miami, where they start a 3-game series tomorrow night against the Marlins.
