MIAMI, FL (WTVB) - The Tigers are in Miami to face the Marlins this weekend to wrap up regular season play after they took the day off yesterday following their American League Central championship clinching victory over the Twins Wednesday night. It won’t be easy but Detroit still has a shot to earn home field advantage in next week’s first round of the playoffs with the Oakland A’s being the Tigers likely opponent in the American League Division Series beginning a week from today.

Home field would be in Detroit’s corner if the Tigers sweep the Marlins and the A’s lose two of 3 to Seattle or if the Tigers take two at Miami and Oakland gets swept by the Mariners. Detroit manager Jim Leyland has to weigh the importance of home field versus giving rest to his players that would benefit from the down time, especially hobbled slugger Miguel Cabrera.
