Kalamazoo 6th graders get an early look at College

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- How’s this for a field trip. Instead of touring a cupcake factory or some stuffy old museum, sixth graders in the Kalamazoo Public School System spend a day at Western Michigan University, touring campus with their “Bronco Buds”.

They are college students who act as mentors and guides. They are not quite adults, just older versions of the sixth graders, and help them make the connection with a future that could be theirs.

Supt. Michael Rice says they are preparing the students to become successful Promise Scholars.

They tell them about college, show them around campus and talk about the Promise scholarship.

They are taking the 6th graders over in groups of 100 to 120 to keep it manageable.

If you are on campus and see a group that seems a little young for college, you will know why.
