BERRIEN COUNTY (WKZO)-- A Southwest Michigan couple may be the last to adopt a child from Crimea, escaping that disputed territory just hours before they held a plebecite and the Russians took over.
Kristine Proctor and her husband, James have been working on the adoption for months, but it got tangled up in international politics at the end.
With time running out Kristine and 16-year-old Melissa jumped on board an overnight train for Kiev.
Kristine Proctor says her new daughter escaped a humanitarian crisis.
They finally flew back to the U.S. this weekend, landing at O’Hare in Chicago before driving back to their home in Berrien County.
