San Diego, CA (WKZO) – The Detroit Tigers could only manage one hit off Padres’ starting pitcher Andrew Cashner and were shutout 6-0 in the opening game of a three game weekend series against San Diego on Friday night.
Cashner was filthy in his second career one-hitter, as he tossed nine scoreless innings and struck out a career high 11 to pick up his first win of the season. The Padres ace kept the Tigers hitless until Raja Davis hit a liner just out of the reach of second basemen Jedd Gyorko in top of the sixth inning. Cashner walked just two.
Rick Porcello suffered his first loss of the season for the Tigers after allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings. Porcello (1-1) gave up 10 hits and struck out five but didn’t walk a batter.
Chase Headley had an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the sixth inning, while four other Padres had two hits.
The Tigers look to bounce back in the middle game of the series on Saturday night. Justin Verlander takes the mound for the Tigers and will be opposed by Ian Kennedy. First pitch is set for 8:40pm.
