UPDATE: Wayside West shooting suspect to be charged with open murder Friday

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The victim of the  shooting at Wayside West on Stadium Drive has been identified as 23-year-old Damian Tarey Tejada of Kalamazoo.

The man in custody is apparently an employee of Wayside West who has not yet been charged or identified.

Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to a call about the shooting around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Tejada was found unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Bronson Emergency where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses gave a detailed description of the suspect and that helped Public Safety, who spotted his car at near Lafayette and West Michigan and made the felony arrest.

The 23-year-old Wayside West employee is expected to be charged with open murder. Its not been released whether he was on duty at the time of the shooting.  In fact the manager does not mention that it was one of their employees who was identified as the gunman, in their statement to the media.

The investigation is taking longer because there are so many potential witnesses who have to be interviewed.

Wayside West Issued this statement to the media:

Wayside West regrets the tragic events which took place last night at our facility which resulted in the loss of a young man’s life.

We are fully cooperating with Public Safety as it interviews our employees and customers in its investigation of this crime.

Wayside has been in business for more than 50 years and has never had an incident like this occur before. The safety of our customers and employees is a top priority.

We have never permitted firearms inside our facility. We believe that this incident was a random act of violence which could have occurred anywhere.

We do not wish to compromise the on-going criminal investigation or intrude on the privacy of the victim’s family. As a result, all inquiries about this incident should be directed to Public Safety.
