Critics blast proposed expansion of Michigan's Education Achievement Authority

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Local control of schools is at stake say opponents of the proposed expansion of the Education Achievement Authority. It may come up for a vote today in the Michigan Senate. The state run E.A.A. has taken over 15 of the lowest scoring schools in the Detroit area and poured money, new programs and new staff into them. Governor Snyder wants it to take over troubled schools statewide.

Critics say the Detroit pilot isn’t working, claiming its lost 24% of its population, it’s de-certified several hundred special education students, it’s lost staff, and the MEAP test results have been basically mediocre so it’s not something you want expand. The measure has already passed in the house, but may fall short in the Senate, where some republican senators oppose the loss of local control. If it fails today, Senate Leader Randy Richardville says they may start from scratch on the issue.
