Kalamazoo Marathon Goes Green with 'Green Strides'

by

The Kalamazoo Marathon and Borgess Run for the Health of It are teaming up to take proactive steps to be more environmentally friendly.

The program—called Green Strides—is utilizing a number of different methods to be more eco-friendly both during the events and leading up to them.

The Green Strides Volunteer Team is a group of volunteers that are assisting with implementation and education about the Green Strides initiatives. The team will have a Green Strides booth at the Expo on Saturday, May 3 at Wings Stadium and will be in Tent City on race day teaching people about the program.

Event registration has been done by paper in the past. This year, the entire process is done online. Paper registrations are no longer distributed and are available upon request only.

Green Strides has created an online rideshare program that is dedicated to the weekend events. This system is designed to assist travelers across the country, across the state and across town in finding others to share a ride with. This will reduce the carbon footprint of getting to the race.

Recycling bins are located throughout the Expo and in Tent City on race day. Members of the Green Strides team will be present at all of the trash and recycling areas in order to make sure the recycling system is successful.

Along with the recycling, the team will be reusing some of the materials used on race day. The totes provided at the Expo and on race day are reusable and much of the signage is also reusable.

The Green Strides booth at the Expo and at Tent City will be collecting used shoes in good condition as well as clothing in good condition that will be donated.

In the past, Borgess Run Camp training teams have been encouraged to participate in a community clean up along the course prior to the race. This year, that community clean up has been opened to the entire community. Following the race, members of the Green Strides team will sweep the course again to ensure there is nothing left on the course and that the course is in good condition.

If you would like to learn more about Green Strides, stop by the Green Strides booth at the Expo or at Tent City on race day.
