Last year's Borgess Half Marathon Champion will Run Again in 2014; Won't be Seeking Repeat

Hannah Norton immersed herself in running later than some, but that didn’t stop her from finding success early on.

“When I first got out of school, I saw an entry for a Battle Creek 5k and a 10k and I thought ‘that’d be cool,’ and I placed,” Norton said.

Since than Norton has been first to the finish line multiple times, including victories in the 2009 Borgess Half Marathon and in last year’s Borgess Half Marathon.

Her 2013 time of 1:21:16 clocked in more than four minutes ahead of the second place finisher.

Norton will be running in the Borgess Half Marathon again on May 4, but won’t be trying to win it this year.

“I’m just going to enjoy the course,” she said.

Rather than going for the win, Norton will be pacing a friend who is also running the Half Marathon.

Due to Norton’s relatively late immersing into the world of running, she has some advice for others who are in a similar position.

“I didn’t run in high school so it’s kind of something I just had to learn,” she said. “A lot of it is just starting to walk. Anybody can do it.”

Norton said the key is to trust what your body is telling you to do.

“If you have to walk just walk and if you have to stop just stop,” she said. “You do it in baby steps. Your body adapts.”

Although Norton said running the Kalamazoo Marathon isn’t out of the question as early as 2015, right now she is just running pressure-free and enjoying her time on the pavement.

“Right now I’m kind of enjoying the lack of pressure,” she said. “I’m just running for fun.”
