Low turnout expected Tuesday

by

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Some pundits are predicting that Tuesday’s primary could break the record for low voter turnouts.

There just isn’t that much on most ballots to vote for. Political officials have been pursuing a policy of “primary avoidance” and parties have been going along by making sure that incumbents and other candidates have no party opponents.

It cuts down on the need for fundraising, aggravation and the risk that the party favorite will get knocked off by an unknown.

There are a few incumbents facing token opposition, and some races for spots on the Kalamazoo County Board ballot in November, if you live in the right district.

Also contributing to a potential low turnout, all of the seats in the U.S. Senate and Governor’s race are set.

That’s apparently the first time that has ever happened before a primary.

Those two races are usually the biggest draws in these primaries.

There is Proposition One, a confusing issue that some experts say may actually scare voters away.
