Verlander falls to .500 as Tigers lose at New York 5-1 Wednesday night

NEW YORK, NY (WTVB) - The Tigers this afternoon will try to salvage a split of their  4-game series with the Yankees, who beat Detroit 5-1 last night in New York. Justin Verlander fell to 10-and-10 with the loss, giving up two runs over seven innings and the defeat sliced Detroit’s Central Division lead over the second place Royals to 3-and-a-half games.

The Tigers were held to 5 hits on the night by New York starter Chris Capuano, who struck out eight and allowed one unearned run over six-and-two thirds innings. Miguel Cabrera's RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning produced the only run for Detroit as they went 0-7 with runners in scoring position. Rick Porcello goes to the mound against the Yankees this afternoon looking for his major league leading 14th win. The Tigers then head out to Toronto for a 3-game series with the Blue Jays beginning tomorrow night.

The White Sox fell to the Rangers 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in Chicago while the Cubs lost 13-4 last night at Colorado.
