BRONX, NY - The Tigers' bats were quiet as the Yankees beat Detroit 1-0 in the series finale yesterday afternoon in New York. Starter Rick Porcello was tagged with the loss to drop to 13-6, despite giving up just one run on nine hits while striking out five in seven innings. The Tigers, who were held to five hits, had runners on first and second in the ninth inning, but Miguel Cabrera came off the bench and hit into a double play, and Don Kelly popped up to end the game. Detroit's lead over second-place Kansas City in the American League Central shrunk to 2-1/2 games as the Royals won at Arizona 6-2.
Detroit opens a three game set in Toronto tonight. Anibal Sanchez will take the mound for the Tigers and R.A. Dickey will start for the Blue Jays.
Elsewhere, the White Sox were thumped at Seattle 13-3, while the Cubs picked up a 6-2 win at Colorado.
