Warren mayor suing to overturn Proposal 1

WARREN, MI (WTVB) - Proposal 1, the plan to phase out the personal property tax on industrial equipment that was approved by a wide margin in Tuesday's primary election, is "confusing," "one-sided," and "blatantly awful", according to Warren Mayor Jim Fouts. He plans to file a lawsuit today to overturn the proposal's passage, noting that his community, which has a number of large industrial taxpayers, could stand to lose $10-11 million in revenue in 2016.

Kelly Rossman-McKinney, the communications director for Michigan Citizens for Strong and Safe Communities, which campaigned for the proposal, told the Detroit Free Press that the proposal was vetted by both the State Legislature and legal counsel. She added that Fouts had plenty of opportunities to voice his concerns since the Legislature first discussed phasing out the tax in 2012.
