PITTSBURGH, PA (WTVB) - The Tigers lost their fourth in a row last night as the Pirates swept the home portion of their four-game series with Detroit, taking a 4-2 victory at PNC Park. The action shifts to Comerica Park tonight and tomorrow afternoon with the second place Tigers still trailing the Central Division leading Royals by a half game after Kansas City had its eight game winning streak snapped last night by Oakland.
In the midst of their current tailspin, Detroit welcomed some good news on Tuesday when an MRI revealed no structural damage in the right shoulder of pitcher Justin Verlander. He left Monday's start against Pittsburgh after giving up five runs in the first inning. The shoulder inflammation diagnosis means Verlander is expected to miss one start with no plans to have him placed on the disabled list.
Last night at Pittsburgh, rookie Robbie Ray surrendered six hits and four runs over five plus frames for Detroit, which got a solo homer from Alex Avila. The Tigers were limited to 7 hits with 8 runners left on base. Tonight, Detroit sends Buck Farmer to the mound, with the right-hander and 2013 fifth round draft pick making his major league debut after only two starts above A-ball.
The Chicago White Sox won 3-2 last night at San Francisco while at Wrigley Field, the Cubs shutout Milwaukee 3-0.
