Castellanos and Avila homer as Tigers snap losing streak with 8-4 win over the Pirates

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Detroit Tigers snapped their 4-game skid last night with an 8-4 win over the Pirates at Comerica Park. This afternoon, Detroit will try to earn a split in the four-game home-and-home series with Pittsburgh. The Tiger’s victory keeps them a half game back of the Central Division leading Royals, who blanked Oakland 3-0.

Detroit’s comeback win last night featured a Nick Castellanos go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning that broke a 4-4 tie.  Castellanos also tripled in the Tiger’s first run. Detroit trailed 4-1 when their rally started in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Avilla led off with a solo home run. Victor Martinez went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s for the Tigers.

Buck Farmer made his major-league debut for Detroit and allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. Blaine Hardy picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. The Tigers last night optioned the 23-year old Farmer to Triple-A Toledo and called up Toledo reliever Melvin Mercedes to assist Detroit’s strained bullpen corps.

This afternoon’s pitching matchup has Max Scherzer on the mound for the Tigers against Pittsburgh’s Francisco Liriano.

The Chicago White Sox lost 7-1 Wednesday afternoon at San Francisco while the Cubs topped the Brewers 4-2 last night at Wrigley Field.
