PAW PAW (WKZO) -- A Van Buren County man has found out the hard way that “Finders Keepers” is not a legitimate concept in the law.
Deputies say John Agusteli was recorded on store surveillance cameras picking up the cash accidentally dropped by a woman at a gas station near Paw Paw.
When the 52-year-old woman from Decatur reported she lost a thousand dollars, police went back to the video and discovered what happened.
They contacted Agusteli and told him to return the money or face charges. He returned $120 insisting that was all he found.
The prosecutor authorized a felony charge.
When they picked up Agusteli, they say they found the rest of the money in his pocket, with sequential serial numbers matching the 100 dollar bill he returned.
They claim he told investigators that it was just a coincidence.
That’s when they seized his car too because they say it was used in the commission of a felony and subject to forfeiture laws.
