Battle Creek neurologist says Parkinson's and depression are often linked

BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- Robin William’s wife disclosed last week that it wasn’t alcohol but a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease that may have been the cause of a suicidal depression.

Borgess Neurologist, Dr. Daniel Hood says it’s not unusual for Parkinson’s patients to get depressed, because it effects dopamine in the brain which can control our state of mind.

He says about half of all Parkinson's patients seek treatement for depression.

He says a Parkinson’s diagnosis is not a death sentence. Some people live with it for decades, but it does slowly rob the victim of their motor skills and mental abilities.

'Michael J. Fox has been battling Parkinson’s since the early 1990’s and he is still acting.
