FORT CUSTER (WKZO) --The Food Bank of South Central Michigan says they are helping 189-thousand people avoid hunger in the eight county area they serve every year, and by and large they are people with few other options.
69% live below the poverty line and 47% make less than ten thousand a year.
A large percentage are children, and they found that about one in every seven Americans nationally need food assistance.
Executive Director Dave Karr says people may have found jobs, but they are low paying jobs and they remain underemployed.
He says they try to provide not just any food, but healthy food, and fresh vegetables when available.
