Strange product tampering scare at Kalamazoo Meijer stores

by

KALAMAZOO (WKZO)-- Police agencies in Kalamazoo County are investigating a bazarre drug tampering scare.

Meijer says its appears someone purchased bottles of vitamins off their shelves, removed the vitamins and replaced them with candy, chocolate chips, nuts and cat food.

They also found prescription heart medications in some bottles, such as Sotalol, which corrects irregular heartbeats, Coumadin, a blood thinner and 800mg Ibuprofen, a prescription pain killer.

None of the drugs are overtly dangerous. .

The bottles that were tampered with originally contained Mega Red Ultra Strength Omega-3 Krill Oil capsules.

A customer bought a bottle and found something other than fish oil capsules inside and reported it.

Detectives say about two dozen bottles were opened and refilled.  They do have a person of interest, a man with mental health problems.

Meijer says it’s cooperating with police. They have inspected shelves and removed anything questionable. They say anyone who is uncomfortable with any product can return it for a refund.

They have found prescription bottles and bottles that were painted black too.

If you have purchased any of the product  recently, check your bottle.

The tampered bottles reportedly appeared at all four Meijer stores in Kalamazoo County.

Portage Police are working with the County Sheriff’s department and are checking with other stores to see if they have any tampered vitamin bottles on their shelves.
