Michigan group calls on Police agencies to give up their MRAPS

ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- Michigan Moms United is asking police agencies to surrender their MRAPs and other military surplus, following Saginaw’s decision to send their armored vehicle back.

Founder Charmie Ghoulson of Ann Arbor says it’s a bigger issue than just the hardware. It’s the whole approach to policing that the guns and the vehicles represent.

She says she wants to demilitarize the police and bring back community policing.

Ghoulson says the intimidating vehicles, the helmets and body armor are used primarily in the war on drugs, and she says its overkill.

Most west Michigan counties have them and the Sheriffs defend them.

Muskegon Capt. Michael Poulin says the MRAPS save lives.

They say between the gun incidents and climate change, they need vehicles that can go anywhere and get people back safely.
