BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- It was as close as they come. The Battle Creek City Commission by the narrowest of margins has decided to pick Rebecca Lynn Fleury to be their next City Manager.
Tuesday night’s process showed that deep divisions remain both on the council and in the community over the direction the city has been going, and the direction they would like it to take.
Public comments included ringing endorsement from staff for current interim Manager Susan Bedsole, but many comments from the public urged change from the Commissioners, the end of scandal in City Hall and improvements in the quality of life in Battle Creek.
The 45-year-old Fleury is currently the Village Manager and Finance Manager in Middleville.
She does have experience working in City Hall in Kalamazoo so she has worked in large organizations.
The final vote was 5 to 4 to begin contract negotiations with Fleury. Final approval will come when they come to terms.
Since Bedsole was only a temporarily appointment to be Interim Manager, she could return to her job as Community Services Director.
