DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Detroit Tigers got a walk off 3-2 win over the Yankees yesterday afternoon when Alex Avila smashed a two-out hit to the right-field wall to knock in the deciding RBI in the bottom of the ninth at Comerica Park. The victory in the rubber game of the 3-game set with New York pulled the second place Tigers to within a game-and-a-half of the Central Division leading Royals following Kansas City’s loss last night to the Twins.
Detroit DH Victor Martinez opened the bottom of the ninth yesterday with a double to set up the winning run. It looked like the Tigers were going to waste a great chance to put the game away when following a walk, Detroit had two on with no outs. But the next two batters both stuck out, leaving it up to Avilla. His clutch hit made a winner out of reliever Phil Coke. Detroit rookie Kyle Lobstein pitched six innings of two run ball in his first big league start.
The Tigers send Justin Verlander to the mound tonight in Chicago where Detroit will open an 8 game road trip starting with a 4-game weekend series against the White Sox, who lost 3-2 to the Indians last night.
The Chicago Cubs fell 7-2 at Cincinnati.
