Heroin still a problem in Kalamazoo but there have been fewer deaths

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- They have held the funeral for actor Philip Seymour Hoffman following his suspected death from a Heroin overdose.

The Kalamazoo Area saw a number of funerals for the same reason just a few years ago as the narcotic made a comeback in the local drug scene.

Capt. David Boyson of Kalamazoo’s COPS Division says the drug continues to be popular among dealers and addicts, and there are still overdoses, but their emergency responses have gotten better, and paramedics can often deliver Narcan in time to reverse the effects of an overdose.

He says it may also be because dealers and users are more careful and the drug is of higher quality.

He says its market driven like anything else and dealers are motivated to keep their customers alive, and feeding their addictions.
