SOCHI, RUSSIA (WKZO) -- The opening ceremonies have been held in Sochi and its time for the games to begin.

And once again Michigan sports fans will have their own favorites to cheer for.

Mark Grimmette of West Michigan is no longer competing in the Luge but he is coaching the U.S. team.  Lauryn Williams is from Detroit. She is a member of the U.S. Bobsled team.

WMU Sports Historian Linda Boorish says South Eastern Michigan is a great incubator for figure skaters and the home base for Jeremy Abbott and several other skaters.

She says Olympic Hockey has changed dramatically from the days of the 'Miracle on Ice' when an amateur U.S. squad upset the Russian Army team.

She says these days its mostly pros, who either play for the NHL or pro teams in Europe.

There are ten Red Wings playing in the Olympics but only one of them, Jimmy Howard is playing  for the U.S. The others are all playing for their home countries.

Muskegon’s Dan Bylsma is Coaching the U.S. Hockey team and Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock is in charge of the Canadian Hockey team in Sochi.
