LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan Democrats want an independent investigation of the escape of a mass-murderer from the Ionia Corrections facility.
Democratic House Leader Tim Greimel says he isn’t sure that Attorney General Bill Schuette or Corrections Officials can be trusted to be “objective” if budget cuts contributed to the lack of security on the night that Michael Elliot escaped.
Staff at the prison suggested that if the guard towers had been manned or the perimeter patrols increased, the escape would have been foiled.
Both were eliminated or reduced by the Department of Corrections to cut costs after Governor Snyder took office.
A spokesperson for the A.G.’s office says they are independent of the Governor’s office and capable of an objective investigation.
Greimel didn't have anyone specifically in mind to do the independent investigtion.
