LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Michigan Democrats want an independent investigation of the escape of a mass-murderer from the Ionia Corrections facility earlier this month. Democratic House Leader Tim Greimel says he isn’t sure that Attorney General Bill Schuette or corrections officials can be trusted to be “objective” in examining if budget cuts contributed to the lack of security on the night that Michael Elliot escaped.
Staff at the prison suggested that if the guard towers had been manned or the perimeter patrols increased, the escape would have been foiled. Both were eliminated by the Department to cut costs after Governor Snyder took office. A spokesperson for the A.G.’s office says they are independent of the Governor’s office and capable of an objective investigation.
