PORTAGE (WKZO) -- The City of Portage has an ordinance requiring that homeowners clear their sidewalks, but what if the city makes it next to impossible.
Bob Hassing says he has cleared his sidewalk several times, only to have the city come along an plow it back in.
He lives on Milham and says his sidewalk is currently covered with 4 feet of solid ice that was scraped off the road and dumped there by city plows.
He couldn’t budge it with his snow blower or a plow attached to his tractor.
Now he has been given a citation and was told by city staff to hire people to truck it away.
He doesn’t feel he should have to pay $168 an hour to clear the sidewalk when he feels it’s the city’s fault.
The city has handed out over 300 citations according to staff, but only when they receive a complaint. The City Council asked City Manager Maurice Evans to look into it.
