LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan’s Director of Corrections told a State Senate Panel that he is ultimately responsible for the conditions that allowed the escape of mass murderer Michael Elliot earlier this month.
But Dan Heyns also told the senators that it was the failure of 2 corrections employees to properly follow practices and procedures that made the escape possible.
Hynes says the two staffers have been suspended, and remedies have been implemented.Rep. Brandon Dillon and other Democrats are still calling for an independent investigation.
They feel it’s a conflict of interest for the Corrections Department to investigate itself.
The guards union says they still think manpower in the gun tower would have prevented the escape.
