DAYTONA, FL (WTVB) - Rookie Austin Dillon will be in the pole position Sunday for the Daytona 500. He drove the number-three Chevrolet car yesterday in its return to the Sprint Cup Series. It's last appearance was in the 2001 Daytona 500 when Dale Earnhardt suffered a fatal crash on the final lap of the race. Martin Truex Junior will start second next to the 23-year old Dillon. They are the only drivers who have locked up their starting positions. The remainder of the 43-car field for the Daytona 500 will be determined in Thursday night's twin-qualifying races, The Budweiser Duel, at Daytona. We’ll carry both of the races on the radio with our live coverage beginning at 6 pm. Our broadcast of the Daytona 500 begins at Noon Sunday.
Denny Hamlin survived a major crash involving half of the field and then held off Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch during the closing laps to win Saturday night's Sprint Unlimited pre-season race at Daytona.
