SOCHI, RUSSIA (WTVB) - At the Sochi Winter Olympics, the U.S. men's hockey team is into the semifinals. Team USA cruised past the Czech Republic 5-2 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. In the other quarterfinal matchups, Canada clipped Latvia, Finland beat Russia, and Sweden blanked Slovenia. The U.S. will meet Canada in tomorrow's semifinals. The gold medal match is Sunday.
Ted Ligety has given the U.S. its first-ever gold medal in the men's giant slalom. And even though former Detroit resident Lauryn Williams came up just a bit short of making history at the Olympics, she has a silver medal to show for her efforts in the woman's two-person bobsled. Williams, a track and field star, won a silver medal in Athens in 2004 and a gold medal in London in 2012, and was trying to become just the second person to win gold medals in both the Winter and Summer Games.
