KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It’s a new Air-National Guard with a new mission and a brand new recruiting office in Kalamazoo, but they also offer the educational benefits, college funding and opportunities to gain experience in an ever-tougher and more technical work-force that is requiring more of its employees.
They have moved their recruiting office from Battle Creek, where their base is located,to The Shoppes on Stadium Drive, closer to the WMU campus and more centrally located to the region’s population base.
In fact there are a number of recruiting stations for the various services located at what they call a “career center”.
Their old mission was servicing and flying the A-10 Warthogs, and other planes. Master Sergeant Norma Gillette says they are transitioning to the cutting edge of the new digital military, remotely piloting the MQ-9 Reaper pilotless aircraft in overseas missions that can include reconnaissance and hunter/killer applications.
Their base next to Kellogg Airport also has a Command and Control Center, and serves as a cyber communications center for operations in Africa and Europe, or domestically if the need arises.
It’s not for everyone, but they are there for those who are interested.
